Home page Chernobyl’s Forgotten Children is based in East Leicestershire. We aim, through fundraising, to help relieve the hardship of disadvantaged children in Belarus, Our main focus is children being cared for in orphanages, homes and hospitals in the Gomel region, an area badly affected by the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. Although the Chernobyl accident itself happened in Ukraine, the prevailing winds carried more radiation north than in any other direction, towards Belarus just a few miles from the Ukrainian border. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory problems and birth defects are just some of the conditions that have increased significantly following the high level of radioactive fallout that came down in southern Belarus. Seventy percent of the region’s land is still contaminated and will remain so for generations. The money we raise is directed to where it is most needed to help improve the quality of life of orphaned, sick and disabled children growing up in this environment. The Belarusian Children’s Fund helps us in this task.
